ACSI Choir Musicale 2007

Unrestrained praise. That's what we learned the word "alleluia" means, and that is what most of the six hundred and fifty high school students at the annual Choir Musicale gave to God on Thursday and Friday. I am so glad I enjoyed it, my first and last one!
Right after our Christmas concert, the Grace Academy high school choir began practicing for the ACSI Choir Musicale, to be held at Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington on March 8th and 9th. Every year, choirs from many different schools from Idaho to Washington to Oregon come to be judged for two different songs, and to practice and sing for a mass choir concert. The phrase "mass choir" is an understatement! Ohh! --Back to our choir: We had some issues to overcome, listed as follows, perhaps the most understandable to those who have experience singing in choirs. In bold is how we overcame those problems.
  1. There were new people coming into Choir for second semester, and many first semester veterans going to other classes. We now have eighteen people in our choir not counting Mr. Williams and Mr. Ruhlman. We were the Honorable Mention for best small choir!
  2. Mr. Williams was not able to conduct us, as we had been practicing, since he was at the 2007 Shepherd's Conference in California with the other elders of Grace Bible Church. Mr. Roberts was able to step in, and had two weeks with a couple of interruptions to practice with us and make a connection so we could respond to his directions. He was worried the night before about our adjudication and ensemble piece, but we came to follow him quite well, especially in dynamics I think.
  3. We have twelve girls and six boys. Our tenors and basses learned to sing strongly, and I personally learned more about blending with the other members of the choir; the best thing about how we sounded for our adjudication is that we sounded unified, which is tough for a small choir.

Some silly quotations from that day:

  • "There'd better be cookies!" --Richie upon waiting outside the cafeteria in the wind and cold for a long time
